The Ministry of Labor has amended the regulations, extending the maximum period for overseas Chinese and international students to apply for a work permit to one year.

During the period of study, the work permit application duration has been revised from "a maximum of 6 months" to "a maximum of 1 year." The details are as follows:

1. Overseas Chinese and international students applying for a work permit from October 1st of the first semester of each academic year until September 30th of the following year, the permit period shall not exceed September 30th of the following year. However, if students submit a photocopy of their student ID stamped with the registration for the first semester of the next academic year by the registration office, or provide proof of registration, the restriction of not exceeding September 30th of the following year will not apply. For example, if a student applies for a one-year work permit on November 30th after completing registration for the first semester of the current academic year, the maximum work permit period will only be valid until September 30th of 2025.

2. If an overseas Chinese or international student applies for a one-year work permit on July 31st, 2025, the work permit period would typically only be valid until September 30th of the same year. However, if the student submits proof of registration for the first semester of the 2025 academic year, and the work permit is issued on August 10th, 2025, the permit period will be valid for one year from the date of issuance, until August 9th, 2026. For international students enrolled in language courses in Taiwan, the work permit period will depend on the registered course duration.

3. The work permit will lose its validity if the student suspends studies, withdraws, graduates, or completes the language learning or technical training course. Students are not allowed to continue working under this invalid permit, as doing so would violate Article 43 of the Employment Services Act.
