[Notice from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan]

Important Reminder: Please follow Taiwan’s rules to prevent African Swine Fever and other major animal diseases from entering the country.
Why this matters:
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a serious disease that affects pigs. It can spread easily through meat products. Taiwan must protect its agriculture and pig farms.
What you need to know:
  1. Dragon Boat Festival is coming soon, and many people send food or travel during this time. In past years, more illegal meat products were found during this holiday. Please be extra careful!
  2. Foreign students are not allowed to bring any animal or plant products (like pork, sausages, fruits, seeds, etc.) when entering Taiwan. Also, please tell your family and friends not to send any pork or animal products to you by mail. If they do, and it is discovered, there will be heavy fines.
  3. What happens if you break the rules:
    • If you bring pork products from a country where African Swine Fever has been found in the past 3 years:
      • First time: You will be fined NT$200,000 (about USD 6,200).
      • Second time: You will be fined NT$1,000,000 (about USD 31,000).
    • If you are not a resident (you don’t have a Taiwan ARC) and cannot pay the fine on the spot, you may be refused entry into Taiwan.
    • If someone sends pork products to you by mail, and customs finds out:
      • First time: The person who receives the package will be fined NT$200,000.
      • Second time or more: The fine will be NT$1,000,000.

Let’s work together to protect Taiwan’s animals and agriculture. Thank you for your cooperation!
